Guwahati, 15 July (HS): The flood situation in Assam has worsened, with the death toll rising to four and more than 37,000 people affected across six districts, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

The latest fatality was reported from the Chariduar Revenue Circle in Sonitpur district. ASDMA said the victim had gone missing on the night of July 13, and the body was recovered the following day.

As floodwaters continued to spread, the number of affected people surged to 37,032. The worst-hit districts are Sonitpur, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Jorhat and Sivasagar. In total, 99 villages under 12 revenue circles have been impacted.

The floods have submerged 1,103.943 hectares of agricultural land. Authorities have opened 20 relief distribution centres, providing relief materials to 6,984 affected residents.

The disaster has completely destroyed one kutcha house, while 72 other kutcha houses have suffered partial damage. In Sonitpur, SDRF personnel rescued 16 stranded people using two boats. Medical teams have also been deployed, with one team stationed in Sonitpur and two in Lakhimpur.

Floodwaters have also damaged infrastructure in four locations, including roads, while relief and rescue operations continue in the affected areas.
