Kerala govt sanctions ₹253 cr to Supplyco for Onam market operations
VD Satheeshan

Thiruvananthapuram, 14 July (H.S.):The Kerala government has approved a financial assistance package of ₹253 crore for the Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation (Supplyco) to strengthen its market intervention measures ahead of the Onam festival and ensure the supply of essential commodities at affordable prices.

Of the total allocation, ₹200 crore has been earmarked for Supplyco's Onam market intervention programme, while ₹53 crore has been sanctioned for the distribution of special Onam food kits to beneficiaries under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) category, commonly known as yellow ration card holders.

The funds were cleared by the Finance Department following the intervention of Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan after Food and Civil Supplies Minister Anoop Jacob sought financial support to facilitate the smooth conduct of Supplyco's festive season operations.

According to the minister, the allocation will enable Supplyco to procure and distribute essential commodities at subsidised prices during the Onam season, helping curb price rise and ensuring that consumers are protected from inflation during one of Kerala's peak shopping periods.

Anoop Jacob said the government is committed to making essential food items available at affordable rates, particularly for economically weaker sections. He added that if the sanctioned amount is exhausted and additional funds are required, the government will be approached again for further financial assistance.

Describing the allocation as unprecedented, the minister said no previous government had released such a large amount to Supplyco in a single instalment ahead of Onam. He said the decision reflects the government's determination to make its market intervention programme more effective and keep the prices of essential commodities under control during the festive season.

The minister has also urged the government to continue supporting Supplyco through the Market Intervention Scheme, stating that sustained funding would help stabilise market prices, improve the availability of essential goods and provide relief to consumers during the Onam festival.
