Dhubri (Assam), 14 July (HS): An alleged illegal abortion racket being run from a residential house in Assam's Dhubri district was unearthed after a 35-year-old woman reportedly died following an unauthorised medical termination of pregnancy.
The accused, identified as Habiba Yasmin, a nurse posted at Dhubri Medical College and Hospital, was arrested along with her husband, Mostafizur Rahman. According to police, the nurse allegedly impersonated a gynaecologist and operated an illegal abortion facility from their residence at Rowa Part-II under Gauripur.
The case came to light after Hazrat Ali lodged an FIR, accusing the couple of causing the death of his wife, Maleka Bibi, due to complications arising from the illegal abortion procedure.
Acting on the complaint, Dhubri Police, assisted by the District Crime Team, conducted a raid at the house and apprehended both accused. An investigation is underway to ascertain the extent of the alleged illegal abortion network and whether more people were involved.----------
