New Delhi, 10 July (H.S.): Indian Railways has taken another significant step towards strengthening rail safety by approving the installation of the indigenous Kavach Version 4.0 Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system across 680 route kilometres (RKM) of the Northern Railway. The project will cover the Rewari–Delhi and Shakurbasti–Bathinda sections, along with their connected feeder branch lines in the Delhi Division, at an estimated cost of ₹206 crore.
The Ministry of Railways said on Friday that the project forms part of Indian Railways' ongoing nationwide rollout of the Kavach system. The initiative aims to expand the deployment of the indigenous safety technology across high-density and strategically important rail corridors, further enhancing railway safety through advanced technological solutions.
Kavach is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system designed to prevent incidents of Signal Passed at Danger (SPAD) and train collisions. The system continuously monitors train movements and, when necessary, automatically applies the brakes to minimise the risk of accidents and ensure safer train operations.
According to the Ministry, the installation of Kavach 4.0 on the Rewari–Delhi and Shakurbasti–Bathinda rail sections will significantly enhance railway safety while improving operational efficiency and the reliability of train services. The upgraded system is also expected to enable faster, safer and more technology-driven operations for both passenger and freight trains.
