Bhubaneswar, 10 July (H.S.): Rainfall activity is likely to intensify across Odisha in the coming days as weather models indicate the possible formation of a fresh low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal ahead of the Rath Yatra festivities.
According to weather experts, a cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over the Bay of Bengal around July 14 or 15, which may subsequently intensify into a low-pressure area. The system is expected to form over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Odisha–West Bengal coast, where atmospheric conditions are currently favourable for its development.
If the system materialises, rainfall is expected to increase across the state from July 13, with several districts likely to experience moderate to heavy showers. The anticipated wet spell could coincide with the Rath Yatra celebrations, prompting authorities and the public to closely monitor weather updates.
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has forecast light to moderate rainfall over parts of interior and coastal Odisha during the next three days.
Speaking on the forecast, Dr. Rajashree, Meteorologist, Regional Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, said a few places in the interior districts and some coastal areas are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall. She added that on July 10, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are likely at one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Angul, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Boudh, Deogarh, Balasore, Bhadrak and Jharsuguda districts. Gusty surface winds with speeds of 30–40 kmph are also expected during thunderstorm activity.
The IMD has advised residents in the affected districts to remain vigilant during thunderstorms, avoid taking shelter under trees and refrain from venturing into open areas during lightning activity. People have also been urged to keep track of official weather advisories, particularly in view of the expected increase in rainfall ahead of Rath Yatra.
