Nagpur, 10 July, (HS): Scolding a student by teacher does not

amount to abetment to suicide. The Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court an

important decision in case of the writ petition filed by parents of a student

from a school in Buldana alleging abetment to suicide against a school teacher.

According to the petitioner the teacher has punished the student

to perform sit-ups for not answering a question. The students later committed

suicide leaving a note that he is taking the extreme step because the teacher

reprimanded him.

The High Court held that there was no material to show that

teacher had intentionally provoked or instigated the students to commit suicide.

The disciplinary action or reprimand cannot constitute the offence of abetment

to suicide.
