Kolkata, 05 June (H.S.) : Trinamool Congress leader and East Midnapore Zilla Parishad health department functionary Sheikh Shamsul Islam was arrested by Nandigram police in connection with a bomb blast case, police said on Thursday night.
According to police sources, the accused was detained from his residence in Daudpur area during a late-night operation conducted by Nandigram police.
Investigators said Sheikh Shamsul Islam was under scrutiny in connection with a bomb explosion incident reported in April. The blast had reportedly occurred inside his house, in which his son was also injured.
Locals claimed that a powerful explosion took place when a polythene packet kept under a staircase was removed, triggering the blast. Following the incident, police carried out searches at the spot and reportedly recovered additional live crude bombs from the premises.
Based on the ongoing investigation, police said they found indications of the leader’s alleged involvement in the case, leading to his arrest after sustained questioning and surveillance.
Nandigram police station officer-in-charge Ajay Kumar Mishra confirmed the arrest and said that investigation into the case is ongoing.
Meanwhile, in a separate development, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has also been conducting raids in South 24 Parganas’ Bhangan area in connection with another case, targeting TMC leader Shaukat Molla. Officials said searches were carried out at his residence and party office, while his son Imran Molla was questioned. However, the leader remains untraceable so far.
