Kolkata, 05 June (H.S.) : Four people, including two women, were injured after an explosion occurred when children allegedly mistook a bomb for a ball while playing in West Bengal’s Chakulia area on Friday, police said.

The incident took place in the Pagalpur locality under Sahapur No. 2 Gram Panchayat, where children were playing inside an abandoned tin shed.

According to local sources, the children found spherical objects inside the abandoned structure and began playing with them, believing them to be balls. Shortly afterwards, one of the objects exploded, triggering a powerful blast that shook the entire area.

An eight-year-old boy, identified as Dilwar, sustained critical injuries and is reported to be in serious condition. He was first taken to Chakulia health centre but was later referred to a higher medical facility due to deterioration in his condition.

Three others were also injured in the blast, including two women. All injured persons are currently undergoing treatment.

Police from Chakulia station reached the spot soon after receiving information and cordoned off the area. The abandoned structure has been sealed for investigation.

Authorities are probing how such explosive materials were stored at the site and who may be responsible for placing them there. Locals have demanded strict action and immediate arrests.
