Chennai, 05 June (H.S.):

Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai on Friday resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), bringing an end to days of intense speculation over his political future and setting the stage for what could be a significant realignment in Tamil Nadu politics.

The BJP’s national leadership confirmed that Annamalai’s resignation from the party’s primary membership had been accepted. The announcement came just hours before the former IPS officer was scheduled to address the media and outline his future plans, triggering fresh debate over his next political move.

Annamalai, 41, had travelled to New Delhi earlier this week and held a series of meetings with senior BJP leaders. The resignation follows months of speculation surrounding Annamalai’s role in the BJP after he stepped down as the party’s Tamil Nadu unit president in 2025. Although senior BJP leaders had repeatedly dismissed rumours of his departure, uncertainty persisted as Annamalai maintained silence over his future political plans.

A former Indian Police Service officer, Annamalai emerged as one of the BJP’s most prominent and recognisable leaders in Tamil Nadu. Known for his aggressive political campaigns and outspoken criticism of rival parties, he played a key role in expanding the BJP’s visibility in the state and energising the party’s grassroots cadre.

During his tenure, Annamalai led several statewide outreach initiatives and became one of the principal faces of the BJP in a state traditionally dominated by Dravidian parties. Despite contesting elections on behalf of the BJP, electoral success remained elusive.

His departure marks a significant setback for the BJP in Tamil Nadu, where he was widely regarded as one of the party’s strongest mass leaders. Political observers are now closely watching his next move, with speculation rife that he could either launch a new political outfit or pursue an alternative political path.

Annamalai is expected to reveal his future course of action during his scheduled public interaction later on Friday.
