Kolkata, 05 June (H.S.) : West Bengal BJP leader Agnimitra Paul has reacted sharply to the arrest of Swarup Biswas, brother of former minister Arup Biswas, stating that several leaders of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) allegedly misused power over the past 15 years to harass people and engage in illegal activities.
Paul said that many TMC leaders and ministers had used their influence to exploit the public and that “accountability is now being fixed through legal processes.” She added that the arrest of Swarup Biswas is part of this ongoing process of legal scrutiny.
Alleging strong influence in Tollywood, the centre of the Bengali film industry, Paul claimed that Swarup Biswas exercised significant control over work opportunities. She alleged that no one could get assignments without his approval and that an atmosphere of intimidation existed for artists and technicians. According to her, several complaints have been filed against him, and law enforcement agencies will act based on those complaints.
Responding to speculation about Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim’s possible resignation, Paul said it reflects what she described as the “irresponsible attitude and self-serving politics” of the TMC leadership. She further alleged that those running municipal bodies under the party have been involved in corruption for years and have failed to provide basic civic amenities to citizens.
She also remarked that discussions about resignations at a time when the monsoon is approaching highlight the administration’s lack of concern for public issues. Instead of focusing on people’s problems, she said, such political debates expose the “real face” of the Trinamool Congress.
