Rain intensity increases in Gujarat, now prepare for torrential rains

Prayagraj, 30 June (HS): According to Dr. Prateek Kumar,

technical officer at SHUATS, the weather in Prayagraj district is expected to

remain active from July 1st to 5th, according to the weather-based agricultural

advisory issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). Rainfall of 6 to

21 mm is expected during this period. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected

on July 2nd and 3rd, while thunderstorms and lightning, accompanied by strong

winds, are expected on July 1st, 2nd, and 4th.

According to weather experts, continuous rainfall will

provide adequate soil moisture for Kharif crops. However, in fields lacking

proper drainage, waterlogging, soil erosion, and plant nutrient deficiencies

may occur. Excessive moisture is also likely to lead to leaf blight, damping-off,

and increased infestation of sap-sucking insects. Strong winds could also

damage nurseries and newly planted crops.

Agricultural scientists have advised farmers to maintain

proper drainage in their fields and refrain from using fertilizers and pesticides

before the rains. They should only carry out necessary agricultural work when

the weather is clear. Prioritize direct seeding (DSR) of rice and sow Kharif

crops such as pigeon pea, black gram, sesame, and peanuts on time.

Livestock owners have been advised to keep their animals in

dry and well-ventilated areas, provide them with clean drinking water, and

avoid leaving them exposed during thunderstorms. Farmers have been urged not to

work in the fields during lightning strikes and to heed the weather

department's warnings.
