Kokrajhar (Assam), 30 June (HS): A man arrested for allegedly impersonating a doctor died on Tuesday morning after suffering a suspected cardiac emergency while lodged in judicial custody at Kokrajhar Jail, officials said.

The deceased, identified as Rabindra Chandra Nag, had been arrested by Kajalgaon Police on June 25 following a complaint accusing him of posing as a registered medical practitioner. The case was registered on the basis of an FIR filed by the Assam Council of Medical Registration.

Police apprehended Nag from Dhaligaon and produced him before a court on the day of his arrest. He was subsequently remanded to judicial custody and sent to Kokrajhar Jail.

According to jail authorities, Nag's health deteriorated in the early hours of Tuesday after he reportedly suffered a cardiac-related medical emergency. He was immediately shifted to Kokrajhar Medical College for treatment, where doctors made efforts to revive him. However, he was declared dead at around 7:30 a.m.

Officials said the mandatory legal and administrative formalities relating to the custodial death will be carried out in accordance with established procedures.---------
