AKolkata, 03 June (H.S.) : Senior Trinamool Congress leader Jayprakash Majumdar was arrested by police on Wednesday following allegations that he had illegally occupied a residential flat for several years and threatened its elderly owner.

Police formally arrested Majumdar after taking him into custody from the Bidhannagar North police station area.

According to the allegations, Majumdar had rented Flat No. AE-337 in Bidhannagar in 2012. However, the tenancy agreement reportedly expired in 2015, and he allegedly neither renewed the agreement nor entered into a fresh contract. Despite this, he and his family are accused of continuing to occupy the property.

The flat’s owner, Aarti Raychaudhuri, has alleged that she repeatedly served legal notices asking Majumdar to vacate the premises, but he and his family failed to comply. She further claimed that she was subjected to abusive remarks and intimidation during the dispute.

The controversy escalated on Wednesday when a group of people gathered outside the flat to protest over the issue. During the demonstration, Majumdar allegedly became involved in a confrontation with some of the protesters, leading to a scuffle.

After receiving information about the incident, police arrived at the spot and took Majumdar into custody before bringing him to Bidhannagar North Police Station.

According to police sources, a case has been registered against the TMC leader on charges related to the alleged illegal occupation of the flat, intimidation of the property owner and other associated offences. An investigation into the matter is currently underway.

The arrest has attracted significant political attention, given Majumdar’s senior position within the Trinamool Congress. However, police officials have maintained that the action was taken on the basis of specific complaints and allegations made in connection with the property dispute.
