New Delhi, 25 June (H.S.): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday expressed deep sorrow over the devastation caused by the powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela a day earlier, extending condolences to the victims and reaffirming India's readiness to assist the South American nation during the crisis.

In a message posted on social media platform X, Modi said he was deeply saddened by the destruction caused by the severe earthquakes and conveyed condolences on behalf of the people of India to the Government and people of Venezuela, particularly to the families who lost their loved ones in the disaster. He also wished a speedy recovery for those injured and expressed solidarity with all those affected.

The Prime Minister stated that India stands ready to extend all possible assistance to Venezuela as rescue and relief efforts continue in the aftermath of the disaster.

The earthquakes struck Venezuela on Wednesday, June 24, triggering widespread destruction in several parts of the country, including areas around the capital, Caracas.

According to reports, two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude occurred less than a minute apart, causing buildings to collapse, damaging infrastructure and prompting large-scale rescue operations.

Authorities in Venezuela reported at least 32 fatalities and around 700 injuries, while emergency teams continued searching for survivors trapped beneath rubble. Officials cautioned that the casualty toll could rise as rescue operations progress and damage assessments continue.

The twin earthquakes, described as among the strongest to hit Venezuela in more than a century, led to widespread panic, power disruptions and structural damage across affected regions. The government declared emergency measures as rescue personnel, medical teams and volunteers worked through the night to assist victims and restore essential services.

PM Modi's message was among several expressions of international support received by Venezuela following the disaster. Venezuela's acting President Delcy Rodríguez later thanked India for its message of solidarity and support during the difficult period.
