Thiruvananthapuram, 22 June (H.S.): Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala has directed the Police Welfare Bureau to provide financial assistance for the treatment of two police officers who suffered severe injuries while on highway patrol duty in Kasaragod district, including the amputation of their legs following a road accident.
According to an official statement issued by the State Police Media Centre on Sunday, the government will release an initial assistance of ₹5 lakh each to the injured officers. The Home Minister also assured that both personnel would be given suitable postings once they recover and are fit to resume service.
“The police force stands firmly with officers who are injured while performing their duties. They will receive every possible support and the best available treatment,” Mr. Chennithala said while reviewing their condition.
The injured officers have been identified as Sooraj (32) and Aloysius (39), attached to the Kanhangad Police Station. The accident occurred on Thursday at Aingoth near Kanhangad while the officers were carrying out vehicle inspections on the National Highway as part of routine patrol and enforcement duties.
Police sources said the officers sustained critical injuries when they were struck during the operation. They were initially rushed to a private hospital in Kanhangad and later shifted to a specialised medical facility in Mangaluru for advanced treatment.
Due to the seriousness of the injuries, doctors were forced to amputate one officer’s leg below the knee, while the other officer lost his foot. Both remain under medical care and are undergoing further treatment and rehabilitation.
The Home Minister personally sought updates on their health status and instructed officials to ensure that they receive the highest standard of medical care. He also reiterated the government's commitment to supporting police personnel who suffer injuries in the line of duty.
The incident has drawn widespread concern within the police force, with colleagues and senior officers expressing solidarity with the injured officers and wishing them a speedy recovery.
