Guwahati, 19 June (HS): A new book titled China’s Colonial Games in Tibet seeks to bring renewed international attention to the Tibet issue by examining China's policies in the Himalayan region and their political, cultural and strategic implications. Edited by senior journalist and Tibet expert Vijay Kranti, the volume has been published by VK Media Group for the Center for Himalayan Asia Studies and Engagement (CHASE). Senior Northeast India journalist and columnist Nava Thakuria reviews the book.

According to Thakuria, the 486-page hardbound publication compiles nearly 60 articles by 39 scholars, diplomats, researchers and strategic affairs experts. The essays are drawn from more than 30 international webinars and discussions organised by CHASE between 2020 and 2023, offering diverse perspectives on Tibet and other regions under Chinese control, including East Turkistan, Southern Mongolia, Hong Kong and Manchuria.

According to the editor, the book aims to document the challenges faced by Tibetan society, including cultural pressures, political restrictions and questions surrounding identity and autonomy. It also explores broader concerns related to human rights, governance and the preservation of cultural heritage.

The collection features contributions from prominent writers and analysts such as Bhuchung Tsering, Claude Arpi, Dechen Palmo, Ethan Gutmann, Gabriel Lafitte, Geshe Lhakdor, Jayadeva Ranade, Jennifer Zeng, Lhadon Tethong and several others. Views of noted personalities including Professor Samdhong Rinpoche, Professor Robert Destro and Central Tibetan Administration President Penpa Tsering have also been included.

One of the book’s notable features is its foreword by the 14th Dalai Lama, who underscores the environmental significance of the Tibetan Plateau, often referred to as the “Third Pole.” He notes that the region serves as the source of many major Asian rivers and plays a crucial role in the lives of more than a billion people.

The book argues that greater global understanding of Tibet’s political, cultural and environmental significance is essential and seeks to encourage informed dialogue on the region’s future. Researchers, policymakers, diplomats and readers interested in Tibet-China relations may find the volume a valuable reference work.
