Shillong, 15 June (HS): Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday underlined the state's accelerating economic and infrastructure progress while addressing the North East Infrastructure Summit and Exhibition in New Shillong in the presence of Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.
Describing the Northeast as a region undergoing unprecedented transformation, Sangma said years of challenges linked to insurgency, law-and-order issues and political instability have gradually given way to an era of growth, improved connectivity and expanding opportunities.
The Chief Minister pointed out that Meghalaya's Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) has risen from ₹29,508 crore in 2018 to ₹59,626 crore in the financial year 2024-25. He said the state's budget has doubled during the last eight years, while capital expenditure has witnessed a nearly six-fold increase, reflecting stronger investment in development.
Referring to key projects underway, Sangma said Meghalaya is gearing up to host the National Games, developing what he termed the country's largest football stadium, and preparing for the introduction of larger commercial aircraft operations at Shillong.
He also acknowledged the contribution of Gadkari and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways in strengthening regional connectivity. According to Sangma, highway projects worth ₹50,400 crore have been sanctioned for Meghalaya, significantly enhancing transportation infrastructure and boosting economic prospects across the state.
Emphasising the broader impact of development initiatives in the Northeast, the Chief Minister expressed confidence that the summit would serve as a catalyst for further investments, stronger connectivity and sustained economic growth throughout the region.-----------
