Shillong, 15 June (HS): Meghalaya is poised for a significant upgrade in its road infrastructure with the commencement of six highway projects worth ₹3,214 crore. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced that the projects will be formally launched on June 15 at the North East Infrastructure Summit in New Shillong.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari is scheduled to attend the event and lay the foundation stones for the projects, which include four new National Highway developments and the upgradation of two existing highway stretches.

The new projects comprise the Pynursla Bypass on NH-206, the Dhubri–Phulbari Bridge-Selsella Road on NH-127B, the Selsella-Goeragre Road on NH-206, and the Tura Bypass on NH-217. Together, these projects account for the bulk of the investment aimed at improving connectivity across the state.

Additionally, the Shillong-Dawki Road and Jowai Bypass will undergo major upgrades to enhance traffic movement and road safety. The two improvement projects are expected to further strengthen Meghalaya’s transport network.

According to the Chief Minister, the highway initiatives will play a crucial role in boosting connectivity, facilitating economic growth, and supporting trade and tourism. Officials noted that the projects are expected to improve inter-district and interstate transportation links while contributing to greater regional integration across the Northeast.

The investment is being regarded as one of the most substantial road infrastructure initiatives undertaken in Meghalaya in recent years, with long-term benefits anticipated for travel, commerce and development.------------
