Kochi, 13 June (H.S.):
Uncertainty continues to loom over seven Dalit families facing eviction from the Pariyathukavu settlement at Malayidom Thuruth near Kizhakkambalam, with mediation efforts failing to produce a breakthrough just days before a June 16 court deadline.
A crucial conciliation meeting convened by Higher Education Minister Roji M. John on Saturday night was called off at the last minute, dealing a setback to efforts aimed at resolving the decades-long land dispute. Residents alleged that the talks were cancelled because representatives of the private landowners did not attend the meeting, though no official reason was provided.
The Kerala High Court has directed authorities to implement an eviction order concerning the disputed 2.6-acre property by June 16. Ownership of the land was awarded to the legal heirs of late Kannattu Sankaran Nair through a Supreme Court decree, bringing a prolonged legal battle closer to its conclusion.
The state government had proposed a compromise formula under which the landowners would surrender five cents of land to each family in the rear portion of the property. The government, in turn, would construct rehabilitation houses and provide essential infrastructure, including roads, pathways and electricity connections. However, disagreements over relocation arrangements and the transition period have stalled negotiations.
Residents insist they will not vacate their homes until alternative housing is fully completed and handed over. They have also sought legally binding assurances guaranteeing the construction of houses and supporting infrastructure. Some residents have warned that if the current proposal fails, they will demand 15 cents of land per family instead of five.
Responding to the concerns, Minister Roji M. John said the government remained committed to finding a peaceful and mutually acceptable solution. He stressed that the dispute could be resolved only through compromise from both sides.
With the High Court set to review the matter on June 16, district authorities are exploring the possibility of holding an emergency meeting to break the deadlock and avert a confrontation.
