Rain, hailstorm provide relief from severe heat wave in Jammu


Jammu, 12 June (H.S.): Moderate to heavy rain and hailstorm provided big relief from the severe hot weather conditions to the people across Jammu region while total blackout was witnessed across Kishtwar district and many parts of district Doda after 132-KV Udhampur-Doda-Kishtwar power line suffered damage, with the fall of a big tree between Doda and Thathri.

Official sources said that amidst rain and hail, thunder-storm and gusty winds were experienced in almost all the plain areas of Jammu, besides Kathua and Samba districts. The windstorm caused some damage to the power infrastructure and tin houses and Kullas of the people in some parts of Samba, Ghagwal and Hiranagar.

It rained heavily in the areas like Bhaderwah, Bhalessa, Dudu-Basantgarh, Bani Sub Division besides Gool Gulabgarh, Mahore and other higher reaches of Ramban and Udhampur districts. However, the road connectivity remained unaffected. Even the movement of traffic on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway remained smooth despite light to moderate rain, officials said.

Reports from Doda said that power supply to many parts of district Doda and entire Kishtwar district was snapped during afternoon when a big tree fell on 132 KV Udhampur-Batote-Kishtwar power line near Gatsu village between Puldoda and Thathri.

A total blackout has been witnessed in the Kishtwar district besides some parts of district Doda with the snapping of

power supply. The officials said that power supply is expected to be restored by tomorrow.

In yet another incident in Doda, the lightning struck a pine tree during noon at Sajjar village of Doda during thunder storm. It triggered fire in the pine forest but it went off after rainfall in the area.

In the winter capital Jammu, the people had a big sigh of relief in the evening on Thursday after moderate to heavy rain and hailstorm hit the city. The rainfall for about an hour, brought big change in the climate and the city's temperature dropped significantly. The water logging was also witnessed in many parts of Jammu while branches of the trees fell on the roads and lanes at several places due to windstorm.
