Thiruvananthapuram, 12 June (H.S.) :Heavy rainfall is expected to continue across isolated parts of Kerala on Friday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing an Orange Alert for Ernakulam and Idukki districts, warning of very heavy rainfall in the region.
In addition to the Orange Alert, Yellow Alerts have been issued for six districts — Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Thrissur, Kannur and Kasaragod — indicating the possibility of heavy rain at isolated locations.
The weather department has also warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds reaching speeds of up to 60 kmph in some areas. Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious, particularly in low-lying and landslide-prone regions, as intermittent heavy showers continue to affect several parts of the state during the southwest monsoon season.
Meanwhile, the National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR) has issued a warning over the possibility of coastal erosion and sea incursion due to the phenomenon known as Kallakkadal or swell waves along the Kerala coast.
According to the advisory, waves ranging between 0.8 metres and 1.4 metres in height are likely to hit various parts of the Kerala coastline until 11.30 p.m. on Friday, raising the risk of sea erosion and inundation in vulnerable coastal areas.
A similar warning has been issued for the Kanyakumari coast, where waves between 1.3 metres and 1.4 metres are expected until 11.30 p.m. on Friday. The NCCR has also forecast swell waves of 0.9 metres to 1.4 metres along parts of the coast until 5.30 a.m. on Saturday.
In view of the prevailing conditions, fishermen, coastal residents and those engaged in activities near the shoreline have been urged to exercise extreme caution. Local authorities have advised people living in vulnerable coastal stretches to remain alert and follow safety instructions issued by disaster management agencies.
The state continues to witness widespread monsoon activity, with weather officials closely monitoring rainfall intensity and coastal conditions over the coming days.
