Kolkata, 11 June (H.S.) : A tense situation prevailed at the New Township Police Station in Durgapur on Thursday when Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers and supporters staged a protest against arrested Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sukumar Dutta and allegedly hurled eggs at him while he was being taken to court.

According to sources, Sukumar Dutta was being escorted from the New Township Police Station to the Durgapur Sub-Divisional Court on Thursday morning following his arrest the previous night. As he was brought out of the police station premises, a large number of BJP workers and supporters gathered outside and began raising slogans against him.

Witnesses alleged that during the demonstration, some BJP supporters threw eggs at the arrested TMC leader, triggering a brief period of tension in and around the police station premises. Police personnel had to intervene to prevent the situation from escalating and to ensure the safe transfer of the accused to court.

Police sources said that multiple complaints had been lodged against Dutta, a resident of the New Township police station area in Durgapur. The allegations reportedly include corruption, creating an atmosphere of intimidation, and extortion-related activities.

Acting on the complaints and preliminary findings, police arrested Dutta on Wednesday night. He was subsequently produced before the court on Thursday.

Officials said the investigation is ongoing and further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the probe. No major law-and-order incident was reported during the protest, although security arrangements were tightened as a precautionary measure.
