Kolkata, 11 June (H.S.): The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has sought a detailed report from its Building Department regarding the status of action taken against alleged illegal constructions linked to properties associated with Trinamool Congress National General Secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee.
According to municipal officials, the KMC administration has directed the Building and Assessment Departments to submit a comprehensive report within five days detailing the current status of demolition proceedings and other actions taken in connection with the alleged unauthorised structures.
Sources said the directive was issued by the KMC Administrator and Commissioner following instructions received from the state Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Department. The civic authorities have sought details regarding the measures taken so far and the stage at which the demolition process currently stands.
It is learnt that notices were issued to between 17 and 21 properties under Section 400(1) of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Building Act. The Municipal Commissioner has sought a complete report on compliance with those notices and the action taken by the Building Department.
According to sources, the civic administration may take a decision on the demolition of portions identified as unauthorised after reviewing the report. The Calcutta High Court has already granted the KMC permission to proceed in accordance with law in matters relating to illegal constructions.
In its order, the High Court had observed that any structure found to be unauthorised should be removed. In compliance with the court's directions, the Municipal Commissioner reportedly held a meeting with officials of the Building and Assessment Departments last week and sought an updated report on the final status of the matter.
Municipal sources said officials have also been instructed to ensure that there is no unnecessary delay in implementing the court's order. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation had recently issued demolition notices to Abhishek Banerjee in connection with the alleged illegal constructions.
No official response from Abhishek Banerjee or his representatives was immediately available.
