Kolkata, 11 June (H.S.) : Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MP Babul Supriyo on Thursday issued a clarification through a video message posted on social media platform X, firmly denying reports suggesting that he was considering joining any other party or internal faction within the organisation.
In his statement, Supriyo said he wished to put an end to “confusion and rumours” and made it clear that he was not aligning with any breakaway group or alternative political formation.
“Amidst all this confusion and rumours, I just wish to make it amply clear that I am neither joining any other faction nor any party,” he said in the video message. He further added, “It’s inappropriate to abandon a ship when it is in troubled waters.”
His clarification comes amid heightened political speculation regarding internal differences within the TMC and reports suggesting the emergence of a possible rebel grouping within the party’s parliamentary ranks.
Earlier in the day, Supriyo had posted a cryptic message on social media, which triggered interpretations among political observers about possible shifts in allegiance. The post reportedly referenced his past political experiences, including his time with the Bharatiya Janata Party, further fuelling speculation.
The developments come at a time when discussions are ongoing in political circles about internal churn within the TMC. According to reports, there have been claims of dissatisfaction among sections of MPs, although no formal confirmation of any split has been made.
Meanwhile, senior TMC leaders including Shatrughan Sinha and Pratima Mondal have recently denied being part of any so-called “rebel bloc,” rejecting similar media reports as baseless.
Political observers also note that such rumours have coincided with broader discussions on party cohesion and shifting alignments within opposition ranks, though official party leadership has not acknowledged any organisational split.
Separate reports have also mentioned speculation involving other parliamentarians such as Sushmita Dev and Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, although these claims remain unverified and have not been formally confirmed by the concerned leaders or the party.
The TMC leadership has so far maintained that the party remains united, dismissing reports of any organised factional breakaway within its parliamentary strength.
