BJP Worker Alleges Assault by Former Councillor Sanjay Nonia and Associates After Event Marking PM Modi's 12 Years in Office

Kolkata, 11 June (H.S.): A political controversy erupted in West Bengal's Paschim Bardhaman district after a BJP worker alleged that he and his family members were assaulted by a group led by former Trinamool Congress leader and former Asansol Municipal Corporation councillor Sanjay Nonia following a BJP programme on Wednesday night.

According to BJP worker Birju Yadav, a prayer meeting and worship programme was organised near the Dhemomen Shiv Temple New Quarter area under Mandal-4 of the Kulti Assembly constituency to mark the completion of 12 years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's tenure.

Yadav claimed that the programme concluded peacefully and on a large scale. However, after the event ended, Sanjay Nonia, his father Rohit Nonia, Balbir Nonia, Rahul Nonia, Manoj Nonia and 20 to 25 others allegedly attacked him and his family members.

According to the complaint, the alleged attackers questioned BJP workers about who had granted permission for the programme and why it was being organised before allegedly assaulting them.

Several BJP workers, including Birju Yadav, sustained injuries in the incident. The injured were admitted to Asansol District Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.

The incident has reportedly led to tension in the area. Police have initiated an investigation and are conducting raids at various locations in an effort to trace and apprehend the accused persons.

Police officials said the matter is being investigated based on the complaint received and that appropriate legal action will be taken against those found responsible.

Amid the developments, police also halted operations at a railway siding reportedly linked to Rohit Nonia after a crowd gathered at the location. Following the action, a group of local women staged a protest. However, the demonstrators dispersed and returned home after being warned by police authorities.

No statement from Sanjay Nonia or the other accused persons was immediately available.
