Thiruvananthapuram, 10 June (H.S.):Kerala is likely to witness widespread rainfall till Friday under the influence of a cyclonic circulation prevailing over the interior regions of north Karnataka and adjoining areas, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The weather department has issued a Yellow Alert for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts for Wednesday and Thursday, warning of isolated heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
Meteorologists said the cyclonic circulation is expected to strengthen monsoon activity across the State, resulting in moderate to heavy showers in several districts over the next few days. The northern districts are likely to receive the heaviest rainfall initially, while the rain belt is expected to shift southward later in the week.
On Friday, heavy rainfall is forecast in Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram districts. Authorities have advised residents in vulnerable areas, including low-lying regions and locations prone to landslides, to remain cautious and closely follow weather updates.
The IMD defines heavy rainfall as precipitation ranging between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are also likely at isolated places across Kerala during the forecast period.
Meanwhile, the weather department has warned fishermen against venturing into the sea along the Kerala, Lakshadweep and Karnataka coasts on Wednesday due to rough sea conditions triggered by the prevailing weather system.
State authorities are keeping a close watch on the evolving weather situation and have directed local administrations to remain prepared for any emergency. Residents have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and to take precautions against lightning strikes.
With the southwest monsoon remaining active over the region, Kerala is expected to continue receiving widespread rain in the coming days, bringing relief from high temperatures but also increasing the risk of waterlogging, flash floods and localised disruptions in several parts of the State.
