Uttar Dinajpur, 01 June (H.S.) : Biraj Biswas, the BJP MLA from Karandighi in Uttar Dinajpur district, has emerged as one of the most talked-about faces in the expansion of West Bengal’s first BJP-led “double-engine” government. At just 32 years of age, he has taken oath as the youngest minister in the state, setting a new benchmark in Bengal politics.

A total of 35 new ministers were sworn in on Monday at Lok Bhavan in the presence of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. Governor R.N. Ravi administered the oath of office and secrecy to the newly inducted members of the Council of Ministers.

Biswas began his public life through student politics and gradually rose through the ranks owing to his organisational skills and grassroots connect. He entered politics through the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and later joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). During his tenure in the student organisation, he served as its State Secretary and subsequently as National Secretary, earning recognition within the BJP leadership.

He gained statewide prominence during the Daribhit movement, where he emerged as one of the leading faces of the agitation against the then state government. His active role in the protest movement even led to his imprisonment, further enhancing his profile among party workers and supporters.

In the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Biswas contested from the Karandighi constituency on a BJP ticket and secured a convincing victory. He defeated his nearest rival, Gautam Pal, by nearly 20,000 votes, marking a significant political achievement and reinforcing the BJP’s growing influence in North Bengal.

News of his induction into the state cabinet triggered celebrations across Karandighi and adjoining areas. Local residents expressed hope that the young minister would focus on long-pending issues related to infrastructure development, public services, and administrative improvements in the region.

Political observers view Biswas’s elevation as a sign of the BJP leadership’s emphasis on promoting young leaders and strengthening its organisational base in North Bengal.
