New Delhi, May 22 (H.S.): The Delhi High Court has granted three days of interim bail to Umar Khalid, an accused in the Delhi violence case. A bench headed by Justice Prathiba Singh ordered that Khalid be released on interim bail from June 1 to June 3.
The court directed that Umar Khalid be released at 7:00 a.m. on June 1 and surrender before jail authorities by 5:00 p.m. on June 3. The court also instructed him to furnish a bond of ₹1 lakh.
As part of the bail conditions, the court directed that Khalid shall not leave the Delhi-NCR region during the period of interim bail. The bench further ordered that he must not visit any place other than the hospital and may carry only one mobile phone with him.
Umar Khalid had challenged the May 19 order of the Karkardooma Court, which had rejected his interim bail plea.
Before the Karkardooma Court, Khalid had sought 15 days of interim bail following the death of his uncle, requesting permission to attend the chehlum ceremony and to remain with his mother before and after her surgery scheduled for June 2.
The Karkardooma Court had observed that although Khalid had previously been granted interim bail and had not violated any bail conditions during that period, it did not automatically entitle him to interim bail on every occasion.
The court had further remarked that attending his uncle’s chehlum was not of such essential urgency and noted that Khalid should have sought interim bail immediately after his uncle’s death. It stated that seeking interim bail several days after the demise diminished the relevance of the request.
