New Delhi, 21 May (H.S.): Chief Justice of India (CJI) Suryakant on Thursday said that he has directed all High Courts across the country to conduct online hearings.

The Chief Justice made the observation during the hearing of a petition seeking online proceedings in all courts in Delhi. He noted that most High Courts have already implemented virtual hearing systems in response to such requests. He further stated that online hearings should be adopted as a voluntary practice for both lawyers and judges.

The CJI also clarified that district courts fall under the administrative jurisdiction of the respective High Courts.

Earlier, on May 15, the Supreme Court had suggested that cases be heard via video conferencing on Mondays and Fridays. Judges had also resolved to encourage carpooling to optimize fuel usage. These steps were taken following the Prime Minister’s appeal to reduce expenditure.
