Malmö (Sweden), 02 May (H.S.):

In the 31st edition of the Tepes Sigeman & Co Chess Tournament, Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi made a stellar start by holding the world's number-one player, Magnus Carlsen, to a draw in the opening round.

During the game, Carlsen attempted to build pressure on the queenside, but Arjun responded with precise defense, playing 24...b6! to neutralize the threat of a passed pawn. He then activated his knight to simplify the position.

After the exchange of rooks, White no longer had a clear path to victory, and the game ended in a draw.

Arjun Erigaisi's 2026 season had begun sluggishly. He finished 13th at the Tata Steel Masters and sixth at the FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship, which Carlsen won.

This event ranks among the strongest classical chess tournaments. Top contenders for the title include 2024 winner Nodirbek Abdusattorov, 2021 champion Jorden van Foreest, and Sweden's number-one player Nils Grandelius.

Arjun's draw against the world's top player could prove a major confidence booster, showcasing his exceptional performance.
