South 24 Paragnas, 16 May (H.S.): Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday announced the dissolution of the Police Welfare Board, saying his government wanted to free the police administration from political influence.

Speaking at an administrative meeting in Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas district, the chief minister said, “Earlier, there was rule of the rulers. Now, there is rule of law.”

Adhikari said the state government was committed to ensuring an apolitical police administration and claimed that during the regimes of the Left Front and the Trinamool Congress, the police machinery had functioned under political control.

The chief minister said the decision to dissolve the Police Welfare Board was part of the government’s efforts to ensure that the police and administration function independently and in accordance with the law.

The announcement is being seen as a significant administrative step by the newly formed government.
