Kolkata, 16 May (H.S.): A BJP supporter was allegedly attacked with a sharp weapon in the Garia area of south Kolkata on Saturday afternoon, leaving him seriously injured, the police said.

The incident took place at Valley Park on Sreerampur Road in Garia following an altercation between two local youths at a grocery shop.

According to police sources, the two youths, identified as “Buro” and Pintu, got into a heated argument while sitting at the shop. Pintu is said to be a BJP supporter.

As the argument escalated, Buro allegedly left the spot and later returned with another person. The police said the accused, identified by locals as a Trinamool Congress supporter, allegedly attacked Pintu with a sharp weapon.

The attackers allegedly stabbed Pintu on his chest and back. When he tried to flee, they allegedly attempted to attack his throat as well, police sources said.

During the assault, Pintu tried to defend himself with his hands, resulting in a portion of his fingers being severed, they said.

The accused fled the area after the attack. Bleeding profusely, the injured man reportedly rode a bicycle to a nearby house, where local women tied cloth around his hand to stop the bleeding before he was taken to hospital.

A local resident said both youths belonged to the same neighbourhood and the violence broke out suddenly during an argument.

The police have started an investigation and are examining whether there was any political motive behind the incident.
