Kolkata, 16 May (H.S.) : An FIR has been lodged against Trinamool Congress national general secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee over allegations of making provocative remarks and allegedly threatening Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the West Bengal Assembly election campaign, police said on Friday.
According to police, the FIR was registered at the Bidhannagar Cyber Crime Police Station on the basis of a complaint filed by one Rajiv Sarkar.
Officials said the complainant had initially submitted his complaint at Baguiati Police Station on May 5, following which a case was registered against Banerjee under multiple sections.
The complaint alleged that Banerjee used inflammatory language during election campaign programmes, which could have created a situation of unrest in the state.
Police said the FIR includes charges under sections 192, 196, 351(2) and 353(1)(c) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with sections 123(2) and 125 of the Representation of the People Act.
According to the FIR, the TMC leader allegedly used aggressive language against opposition workers during public meetings.
Complainant Rajiv Sarkar, who described himself as a social worker, claimed that if the Trinamool Congress had returned to power, attacks on common people could have taken place.
He also maintained that his complaint was not politically motivated.
Police said an investigation into the matter was underway.
