Mumbai, 14 May

(HS): Former Maharashtra Women’s Commission chief Rupali Chakankar attended the

office of the Enforcement Directorate on Thursday. The ED had summoned

Chakankar for investigation related to charges of extortion against Nashik’s

fraudster Ashok Kharat.

Chakankar’s name

surfaced in the case involving extortion of about Rs 70 crore and financial

transactions using fake accounts.

Kharat has been

charged with extortion and cheating involving several crores of rupees and used

fake bank accounts to conceal the transactions.

Earlier the

Special Investigation Team had interrogated Chakankar for more than five hours.

After the enquiry by the SIT, ED has summoned her for investigation into

illegal financial transactions, money laundering and her involvement in an organisation

titled ‘Shivnika’. The connection in other states and foreign countries are

also being investigated.
