Guwahati, 14 May (HS): The Assam Pradesh unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday lauded the NDA government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for initiating steps towards implementing key electoral promises during the very first Cabinet meeting of the new government.
Addressing a press conference at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati, BJP spokesperson Dr. Suranjan Dutta said that political parties place vision documents before the people ahead of elections with commitments aimed at public welfare and development. He stated that during the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, BJP Assam Pradesh had released a comprehensive Sankalp Patra containing 31 major commitments focused on the overall progress and prosperity of the state.
Referring to the formation of the new government, Dr. Dutta said that following the BJP-led NDA alliance’s decisive electoral victory, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took oath for a second consecutive term on May 12. The first Cabinet meeting of the new government was subsequently held on May 13, during which the Cabinet resolved to implement all 31 promises outlined in the Sankalp Patra over the next five years.
He further stated that during his previous tenure, the Chief Minister had assured the Assam Legislative Assembly that the government would move towards implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) if re-elected to power. According to Dr. Dutta, the Cabinet, in its first meeting of the new term, took a significant decision in favour of implementing the UCC in the state.
Apart from the UCC, the Cabinet also approved several decisions relating to governance reforms, infrastructure expansion, employment generation, transportation and administrative restructuring aimed at accelerating the state’s development agenda.
Highlighting employment initiatives, Dr. Dutta said the Cabinet decided to constitute a Special Task Force under the leadership of the Chief Secretary to expedite the recruitment process for an additional two lakh government jobs in Assam.
The BJP Assam Pradesh also expressed gratitude and appreciation towards Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for what it described as honouring the party’s electoral commitments with prompt and decisive action in the very first Cabinet meeting of the new government.-----------
