
Kolkata, 13 May (H.S.): Trinamool Congress councillor Shantanu Majumdar, alias Mejo, from Baranagar in North 24 Parganas district, has been arrested on charges of extortion and criminal intimidation. Majumdar is the councillor of Ward No. 14 of Baranagar Municipality. He was arrested by Barrackpore Police on Wednesday.
According to police sources, a woman identified as Rita Roy, a resident of Baranagar, lodged a complaint against Majumdar at the police station on Tuesday. In her complaint, she alleged that the councillor extorted money from her on multiple occasions on the pretext of resolving a dispute involving a tenant in her flat.
The complainant alleged that between 2024 and 2026, Majumdar collected nearly Rs 70,000 from her in installments. He has also been accused of forcibly placing a tenant in the flat.
Following the complaint, Barrackpore Police initiated prompt action and arrested the accused councillor within 24 hours.
Police said that Majumdar has been charged with criminal trespass, extortion, intimidation, and issuing threats. A case has been registered against him under relevant sections 333, 308(5), 351(3), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
