PROJECT HIMANK RE-OPENS NATIONAL HIGHWAY-03: SNOW CLEARANCE OPS

Leh, 13 May (H.S.): The Snow Clearance Team of Project HIMANK, led by 111 Road Construction Company (RCC) under 753 Border Roads Task Force (BRTF), has successfully completed the Snow Clearance Operations, 2026 on National Highway-03 (Leh-Manali Axis) up to Sarchu, restoring strategic and civilian connectivity between Ladakh and the rest of the country. The operation, which commenced on 16 March 2026 under extremely challenging high altitude conditions, culminated with the opening of the National Highway for traffic movement after sustained and relentless efforts by Project Himank.

The operation involved snow clearance and widening of the National Highway to double lane standards across some of the most difficult stretches of the axis, including the high altitude passes of Tanglang La (17,482 feet), Lachung La (16,616 feet) and Nakee La (15,457 feet), along with the treacherous Gata Loops (22 hair pin bends). Teams encountered massive snow accumulations, sub-zero temperatures, avalanche prone zones, blizzards and snow slides during the operation. Despite these formidable challenges, personnel and equipment of Project HIMANK worked tirelessly round the clock to overcome every obstacle and ensure timely restoration of connectivity.

Heavy Snow Cutting machinery was deployed in a synchronised manner while adhering to strict avalanche safety protocols and high-altitude operational drills. The widening of the road to double lane configuration will significantly improve traffic movement, logistical sustainment and safety for both civilian commuters and defence convoys moving along this vital strategic route.

The successful completion of the operation stands as a testament to the dedication, resilience and professionalism of the Project HIMANK, who continue to serve at the harshest terrains and weather conditions. The reopening of NH-03 up to Sarchu and simultaneous opening of road from Himachal side by Project Deepak marks a major milestone in ensuring seamless connectivity, boosting tourism, facilitating economic activity and strengthening strategic infrastructure in the Union Territory of Ladakh. Project HIMANK remains committed to maintaining all weather connectivity and developing critical road infrastructure in the remote border regions of Ladakh in service of the nation.
