Thiruvananthapuram, 13 May (H.S): Kerala is likely to witness widespread rainfall activity in the coming days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds across isolated parts of the state. Gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 40 kmph are also expected in several regions on Wednesday.
Although no district has been placed under a special rain alert for the day, weather officials have indicated that rainfall intensity is likely to increase in northern Kerala from Thursday onwards. The IMD has warned that isolated places in Kerala could receive heavy rainfall between May 14 and May 16 due to prevailing atmospheric conditions over the region.
According to the weather department, the southwest monsoon is expected to advance into parts of the South Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands by the end of this week, signalling the gradual onset of the monsoon season over the Indian subcontinent.
Meteorologists said a low-pressure area persists over the southwest Bay of Bengal and is likely to intensify further within the next 48 hours. In addition, another cyclonic circulation has formed over south Karnataka at an altitude of around 5.8 km above sea level, contributing to unstable weather conditions over Kerala and neighbouring regions.
Under the influence of these systems, Kerala and Mahe are expected to receive isolated spells of rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning over the next five days. The IMD has also cautioned that strong surface winds with speeds ranging between 30 kmph and 50 kmph may occur at isolated places during this period.
Authorities have advised the public to remain cautious during thunderstorms and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rain and strong winds.
