Guwahati, 11 May (HS): Senior Congress leader and former Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia on Monday extended congratulations to Chief Minister-designate Himanta Biswa Sarma following the NDA’s victory in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, while also placing before him a series of pressing issues concerning the state.

In an open letter dated May 11, Saikia conveyed his best wishes to Sarma for his new tenure and expressed optimism that Assam would witness peace, development and stability over the next five years under the incoming government.

Alongside his message of congratulations, the Congress leader emphasized the need for immediate attention to several unresolved matters. He called for effective implementation of the Assam Accord and stressed the importance of addressing the issue of illegal immigration through appropriate measures.

Saikia further urged the government to speed up the process of granting Scheduled Tribe status to six indigenous communities of Assam, stating that the matter had remained pending for a long time.

Raising concern over the social atmosphere during the recently concluded elections, Saikia alleged that differences and tensions had surfaced among various communities and language groups. He appealed to the new government to work towards restoring social harmony and strengthening unity among the people of Assam.

The Congress leader also sought a swift and transparent investigation into the death of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg and requested the government to ensure adequate support to the bereaved family during the course of the inquiry.

Saikia concluded the letter by wishing Sarma a successful and people-centric tenure as Chief Minister of Assam.-----------
