Bhubaneswar, 11 May (H.S.) : Bhawanipatna–Khariar Road in Odisha is set to be upgraded from a two-lane to a four-lane highway under a major infrastructure initiative aimed at strengthening regional connectivity and boosting economic activity in western Odisha.
Minister for Works and Law, Prithviraj Harichandan, on Monday announced that the 70-km-long stretch will be developed at an estimated cost of ₹640 crore. In addition, ₹91 crore has been allocated for associated bridge construction works.
The project includes the construction of five major bridges and 15 minor bridges along the route. The existing bridge over the Tel River will also undergo reconstruction and renovation as part of the development plan.
The Minister said the upgraded highway will significantly improve connectivity between Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Nuapada districts, ensuring smoother and faster travel for commuters. He added that the improved road infrastructure will particularly benefit farmers and traders by facilitating the efficient transport of agricultural produce, vegetables, and forest resources to markets.
According to the Minister, the four-lane expansion will reduce travel time, improve fuel efficiency, and enhance road safety. It will also ensure faster movement of buses, ambulances, and other essential services.
He further noted that the project is expected to generate new employment opportunities at the local level by encouraging the development of commercial establishments such as shops, petrol pumps, warehouses, and small-scale industries along the corridor. Improved connectivity is also expected to enhance access to educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and administrative services.
