Hooghly, 10 May (H.S.): A Trinamool Congress worker was found dead under mysterious circumstances in West Bengal’s Goghat area of Hooghly district on Sunday, the police said.

The deceased, identified as Sahadeb Bag (50), was the husband of Nakunda gram panchayat member Chaina Bag.

According to police sources, Bag had gone out for tea on Saturday evening but did not return home. His blood-stained body was recovered on Sunday morning from near a drainage canal behind a Trinamool Congress party office at Kota village under Nakunda panchayat in Goghat.

The police said injury marks were found on his face and forehead. The body has been sent for post-mortem examination and an investigation has been initiated.

Chaina Bag alleged that BJP-backed miscreants had been threatening her husband for the past few days and were responsible for his murder.

The BJP, however, denied the allegation and claimed that the death was the result of infighting within the Trinamool Congress.

A large police force has been deployed in the area to maintain law and order, officials said.
