Toronto, 01 May (H.S.): Cricket Canada has appointed Indian-origin veteran coach Monty Desai as the new head coach of its men’s national team. The decision comes at a time when the organization is struggling with allegations of corruption and mismanagement and is trying to rebuild itself.

Cricket Canada described the appointment as a strategic move aimed at bringing consistency to the team’s performances and strengthening its standing at the international level. The team recently featured in the T20 World Cup 2026, and the appointment has been made with upcoming ICC events in mind.

Cricket Canada president Arvinder Khosa said, “Our priority is to restore Cricket Canada’s reputation with performance, professionalism and fresh energy. Monty Desai’s appointment is an important step in that direction. His experience with teams such as Nepal and Afghanistan shows that he can take sides to new heights through discipline, leadership and long-term planning.”

Desai brings more than 20 years of international coaching experience. He has also previously worked with Rajasthan Royals, an IPL franchise. He played a key role in helping Nepal regain ODI status and qualify for several global tournaments.

Desai said, “It is an honour for me to take on this responsibility. I thank Cricket Canada for the opportunity. My previous experience in Canada gave me a chance to understand the country’s potential and passion for cricket. In today’s era, associate cricket plays an important role in the growth of world cricket. Teams like Nepal and Afghanistan have shown what can be achieved through belief, discipline and fearlessness. Canada has the same opportunity, and my goal is to turn that potential into consistent performances.”

Cricket Canada secretary

Paramjit Saini said Desai’s record speaks for itself and that he has played a significant role in making associate teams competitive. He expressed confidence that Canadian cricket will reach new heights under Desai’s leadership.

Notably, the appointment comes after recent reports exposed administrative lapses and allegations of corruption within Cricket Canada. In that context, Desai’s arrival is being seen as a fresh start for the organization.
