Kolkata, 08 April (H.S.): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday paid tribute to noted litterateur Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay on his death anniversary through a post on social media platform X, while also criticising attempts to “misuse” the legacy of Bengal’s great thinkers.
In her message, Banerjee described Bankim Chandra as a leading voice of the Bengal Renaissance and a guiding force of modern Bengali literature. She said his intellectual depth and richness of language continue to inspire generations.
She further stated that his writings instilled a sense of self-respect and patriotism among people during colonial rule. Referring to ‘Vande Mataram’, she said the song still evokes deep love for the nation and respect for martyrs, calling it a key pillar of national identity.
The Chief Minister also alleged that a section of people is trying to distort the legacy of Bengal’s revered figures for “petty political gains.” She said those unaware of Bengal’s history are attempting to misuse the names of such iconic personalities.
Banerjee asserted that the people of Bengal take pride in their cultural icons and will give a befitting reply to those who try to disrespect their heritage.
