Kolkata, 08 April (H.S.): A major fire broke out at a jute mill in Naihati on Wednesday morning, gutting a large portion of a jute warehouse and causing extensive damage, officials said.
The blaze erupted around 11 am at the Nadia Jute Mill and quickly spread across a vast area of the storage facility, making it difficult to bring under control.
Five fire tenders were rushed to the spot and firefighting operations were immediately launched. However, due to the high intensity of the fire and the presence of highly inflammable materials, firefighters faced considerable challenges in dousing the flames.
Preliminary estimates suggest that goods worth several crores of rupees may have been destroyed in the incident. No casualties have been reported so far, officials added.
On information, Naihati Municipality Chairman Ashok Chattopadhyay and Trinamool Congress local candidate Sanat De visited the site and took stock of the situation. They directed officials to expedite efforts to bring the fire under control.
The exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Fire department officials said a detailed investigation will be conducted once the situation is fully brought under control.
