Guwahati, 07 April (HS): The Assam Pradesh unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the Congress of insulting Sanatan civilization and religious sentiments and lodged a First Information Report (FIR) against Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday.
According to BJP spokesperson Ranjeeb Sharma, the FIR was filed at Basistha Police Station in Guwahati, alleging that the Congress has stooped to targeting sacred symbols to appease vote bank politics. In a statement, the party strongly condemned the alleged remarks and termed them an attack on religious faith and traditions.
The BJP stated that comments made during an election rally held on April 6 in Nilambazar under Sribhumi district amounted to a direct insult to Hindu beliefs and customs. The party further alleged that while the Congress leadership speaks about constitutional values, its actions contradict the principle of respecting all religions.
Reacting to Kharge’s reported demand to ban the RSS and BJP, the party described it as a reflection of political intolerance and questioned the mindset of the Congress leadership. The BJP also claimed that attempts were made to portray even the sacred ornaments of Lord Shiva as “harmful,” which, it said, hurt the sentiments of millions of devotees.
Another BJP spokesperson, Pranjal Kalita, alleged that the Congress is deliberately trying to weaken Sanatan culture and project other religions as superior for political gains. He added that such divisive politics has already been rejected by the people of the state and the country.
Taking the matter seriously, the Assam BJP has not only filed an FIR at the Basistha Police Station but also submitted a complaint before the Assam State Election Commission, seeking immediate legal action against Kharge for making inflammatory statements that could disturb social harmony during the election period.
The party asserted that any attempt to hurt religious sentiments, disrupt communal harmony, or misuse election platforms for divisive propaganda will not be tolerated and must be dealt with strictly under the law.---------
