Hooghly, 06 April (H.S.): A political row has broken out in Hooghly’s Uttarpara Assembly constituency after the attire of BJP candidate Deepanjan Chakraborty during election campaigning drew sharp criticism from the Trinamool Congress, which accused him of violating the Model Code of Conduct.
According to reports, Chakraborty was seen wearing a black tracksuit with “NSG” written on it during campaign activities. This prompted objections from Trinamool Congress, which questioned whether symbols associated with elite national security forces can be used in political campaigning.
TMC alleged that the BJP candidate was attempting to influence voters by implying links with the National Security Guard and by referencing encounter operations. The issue has intensified political tensions in the area.
Responding to the matter, TMC candidate Shirshanya Banerjee said that a formal complaint would be lodged. He further accused the BJP of trying to influence elections using agencies and resorting to such tactics.
However, Chakraborty on Monday dismissed the allegations, stating that the outfit was not an official NSG uniform but a common tracksuit that anyone can wear. He added that he is ready to respond if any legal action is initiated. Citing an example, he mentioned that Mahendra Singh Dhoni has also been seen wearing similar tracksuits.
The controversy has since triggered sharp political exchanges in the constituency.
