Nagaon (Assam), 06 April (HS): With just two days left for the 2026 Assam assembly elections, political campaigning has intensified across the state, with candidates from both ruling and opposition parties making last-minute appeals to voters.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday campaigned in Barhampur in support of BJP candidate Jitu Goswami, expressing confidence in his victory. Addressing a public gathering, the Chief Minister said that although Goswami had secured fewer votes in the previous election, the enthusiasm among voters this time indicates a significant improvement in his performance.

“I have a special liking for Jitu Goswami and from the public response, it is clear that he will receive a much higher number of votes this time,” Sarma stated.

During his speech, the Chief Minister also launched a sharp attack on opposition parties, alleging that the Assam Jatiya Parishad gives tickets to individuals with questionable backgrounds. He further made a controversial remark claiming that “Bangladeshi-origin voters will support Rajen Gohain, while Assamese voters will back Jitu Goswami.”

Sarma also took a dig at Rajen Gohain, suggesting that he would have been better suited in the Congress rather than the Assam Jatiya Parishad.

The remarks have added to the heated political atmosphere in the run-up to the assembly elections in Assam.-----------
