Howrah, 06 April (H.S.): A violent clash between two groups in Liluah area of Howrah district on Sunday night triggered tension, with reports of a youth seen brandishing a sword on the street, creating panic among residents.

According to sources, a group of youths was celebrating a friend’s birthday and cutting a cake when another group allegedly started abusing them, leading to a sudden escalation of the situation. Soon, both sides engaged in a physical altercation, exchanging punches and kicks.

A video of the incident also went viral on social media, showing a youth moving around with a sword. The video further showed that when a woman attempted to intervene, she was threatened.

At least five people were reportedly injured in the clash, which took place in the Dagar Bagan area of Liluah, leaving residents in fear.

Local sources suggest that the violence stemmed from a long-standing rivalry between two factions of the ruling Trinamool Congress. It is alleged that supporters of former Domjur MLA Kalyan Ghosh and current party candidate Tapas Maiti were involved in the clash.

Upon receiving information, teams from Liluah Police Station, along with central forces, reached the spot and brought the situation under control.

The police have detained three persons from both groups for questioning, and a police picket has been deployed in the area as a precautionary measure.
