Nagaon (Assam), 06 April (HS): Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi on Monday launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging corruption and misuse of power, and warning that he would be sent to jail if the Congress forms the next government in the state.

Addressing an election rally at Raha in Nagaon district, Gogoi claimed that while the state government failed to provide land pattas to the people of Assam, the Chief Minister had allegedly acquired vast properties abroad. He further alleged that while distributing ₹1,250 to the public, Sarma himself had purchased thousands of bighas of land.

Gogoi also promised that if voted to power, the Congress government would ensure justice for Assamese singer Zubeen Garg within 100 days. He added that alleged links between Shyam Kanu Mahanta and Himanta Biswa Sarma would be exposed.

Highlighting his family’s political legacy, Gogoi said his father, former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, served the state for 15 years without acquiring foreign properties or establishing media channels, focusing only on public service.

He further alleged that educational institutions in backward areas were being shut down while liquor shops were being opened. Gogoi said that if the Congress returns to power, such liquor outlets would be closed, schools reopened and transportation facilities arranged for students.

The Congress leader also alleged that money from cattle and coal syndicates was being routed to influential quarters in Dispur, adding that a thorough investigation would be conducted if his party forms the government.---------------
