Bhubaneswar, 28 April (H.S.): A shocking incident from the Patna area of Keonjhar district has drawn widespread attention after a man allegedly brought his deceased sister’s skeletal remains to a bank while seeking to withdraw money from her account.
According to officials of Odisha Gramya Bank, the individual, identified as Jitu Munda, visited the bank requesting withdrawal of funds from the account of his sister, Kalra Munda, who had passed away around two months ago.
Bank authorities informed him that, as per standard procedure, submission of a valid death certificate was mandatory to process the transaction. However, reportedly misunderstanding the requirement and insisting on immediate withdrawal, the man later returned carrying skeletal remains, leading to panic and commotion within the bank premises.
Following the incident, senior officials initiated an inquiry. Based on CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts, officials clarified that the man had not visited the bank prior to that day. During his first visit itself, he was advised to provide the necessary documents, after which he returned with the remains.
Bank Manager Sushant Kumar Sethy stated that the man demanded withdrawal from the deceased’s account but was clearly instructed to submit a death certificate. “It was his first visit, and after being told the requirements, he returned within a couple of hours with the skeleton,” he said.
Investigating Officer Satyabrata Nanda further clarified that the individual had not previously communicated with the bank regarding the matter and behaved in an inappropriate manner during the visit. He emphasized that the funds remain safe in the account and will be released only to the rightful beneficiary after due verification.
